Grand Theft Auto Resources

This page, as the name implies, will focus on indexing various resources for GTA games (mostly the 3D trilogy), such as mods, guides and other stuff. Think of it as a directory for various GTA goodies.

Each file/utility/guide/mod/whatever has been checked and verified to be safe and reliable. Anything outdated or incorrect will be removed as seen fit, unless it remains on the page for historical/archival purposes.

Getting Started

If you want a simple "TL:DR;" of getting these games running on modern hardware, look here. Make sure to follow any readme files included with each download.

Games

Currently, this section only contains the PC versions of the games from the 2D and 3D eras. No GTA IV for now, and definitely no GTA V ever. THE DOWNLOAD LINKS ARE CURRENTLY DISABLED UNTIL I FIND AN ALTERNATIVE WAY OF PROVIDING THEM

2D Era

  • Grand Theft Auto (Rockstar Classics)
  • Grand Theft Auto: London 1969 (requires GTA 1)
  • Grand Theft Auto: London 1961 (requires GTA 1 and London 1969)
  • Grand Theft Auto 2 (Rockstar Classics)

3D Era

  • Grand Theft Auto III (Steam)
  • Grand Theft Auto Vice City (Steam)
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (1.0, downgraded from Steam)

Notes

  • If you plan to play GTA 1, London 1969 and London 1961 on a modern computer, downloading and installing them individually through the links above is very much not recommended, and are uploaded purely for archival purposes. Consider using the Ready2Play package instead.
  • For GTA 2, Widescreen Fix and FrontendFix are highly recommended.
  • For GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas, the Essentials Pack is highly recommended. Look in the Sources section for a link to it for each of the games. For other mods that come recommended, look in the Mods section. Two other mods that are highly recommended for III and Vice City are EAX Alchemy Fix and Windowed Mode.

Mods

Mods for the GTA games that are not essential per se, but still come very much recommended. Make sure to read the readme files for installation instructions.

III/Vice City

  • The Leftovers Fix: III / Vice City (Various contributors): Restores many of the lost features/details from the PS2 versions of the games.
  • Menu Map: III / Vice City (_AG): Plugin that adds an interactive map in the pause menu. Very helpful for III especially, which originally lacked such a pause menu map.
  • SharpTrails (aap): Removes the blur effect from the "trails" effect. (INCOMPATIBLE with Windowed Mode!)

San Andreas

  • Faster Clothes Changes (Junior_Djjr): Allows much faster changing of clothes in the wardrobe and the various clothing stores.
  • Full Radio Control (Neon, Junior_Djjr): Allows you to control the volume of the radio in real-time without pausing the game. Requires CLEO+ (already included in Essentials Pack)
  • GPS Redux (juicermv, Junior_Djjr and others): Draws a line for the fastest route to your waypoint on the minimap.
  • Improved Fastloader (LINK/2012): Enables the game to load much faster by disabling stuff like loading screens and delays, while being fully configurable.
  • Improved Streaming (Junior_Djjr): Preloads the game files to fix loading issues and reduce disk usage.
  • MixSets (Junior_Djjr and the entire GTA 3D Era community): An extensive mod with hundreds of configurable tweaks/mods. MixSets is also available for GTA III and Vice City, but is nowhere near as huge as the San Andreas version.
  • Proper Fixes (Junior_Djjr, Jessica Natália and others): Massive pack of bugfix mods that corrects a huge amount of issues in the game. Requires Open Limit Adjuster (already included in Project2DFX) and SkyGfx with the buildingPipe setting set to PS2
  • Real Traffic Fix (Junior_Djjr): Fixes a lot of weird issues with the traffic AI and gives them more realistic behavior.
  • SkyGrad (Wesser): Fixes the ugly color banding visible in the sky.
  • Sprint Everywhere (HzanRsxa2959): Removes the weird and artificial limits of sprintable surfaces indoors.
  • Tutorial Free Roam (Neon): Lets you control CJ during the Busted/Wasted tutorial prompts.

3D Trilogy

  • Project2DFX: III / Vice City / San Andreas (ThirteenAG, TJGM): Gives the city more life by creating LOD lights in the distance. Also increases the draw distance with the included limit adjuster. May cause incompatibilities in GTA III
  • SkyGfx: III / Vice City / San Andreas (aap, ThirteenAG and others): Extensive graphics mod that restores and ports visual effects from the PS2 versions and other platforms. The San Andreas version also has a fork called SkyGfx Extended that adds many new features like procedural stochastic texturing.

Utilities

Listed below are various utilities for modifying the GTA games.

Guides

  • PCGamingWiki has a page for every game in the series detailing fixes and compatibility issues. Recommended read, especially for the 2D era games.
  • San Andreas - The ULTIMATE MODDING GUIDE is the best modding guide for San Andreas available. It details everything you need to know about installing and creating mods for San Andreas, diagnosing crashes and where to find more mods. A lot of the information also overlaps with III and Vice City modding. It's a must-watch if you ever feel like diving into San Andreas modding.

Note: The vast majority of the MixMods links below have the original source on the bottom part of the page. Look for the "Origem"/"Origin" link.
